Protection of sterilization packs against damage

Protecting sterilized medical materials from contamination is a very important element of sanitary procedures in any practice. Already at the stage of preparing sterilization packs, it is essential to choose the appropriate packaging size so that the sterilized instrument fits freely inside and can be conveniently removed before use. The tips of sharp instruments should be protected to prevent puncturing or cutting the package. Special silicone protective caps, available in various sizes, are used for this purpose. The caps may be transparent or colored. Different color variants not only facilitate instrument identification but also reduce the risk of losing them within the practice. After sterilization and cooling, packs must be stored in a safe place to prevent damage to the packaging, which is most often a pouch or sleeve made of medical paper and film. During possible transport of instrument packs, it is advisable to additionally protect them with special protective plastic bags.

Effective sealing of sterilization packs made of paper and nonwoven fabric

Sterilization tapes made of crepe paper coated with a strong adhesive are used to secure sterilization packs made of paper or SMS nonwoven fabric. These tapes are therefore indispensable when sterilizing medical materials with unusual shapes or large dimensions – wherever the use of standard pouches or sleeves would be impossible or difficult and paper wrapping must be used instead. For packs with non-standard shapes, prepared entirely by personnel responsible for sterilization, the quality of sealing is particularly important. It determines the durability of the entire pack both during the autoclave process and during subsequent storage. Sterilization tapes are adapted to the conditions characteristic of the process, especially temperature and humidity, guaranteeing pack integrity. An additional advantage of sterilization sealing tapes is the presence of a type I sterilization indicator, which confirms that the sterilization process has been carried out.
